The borough's primary schools were ranked fourth out of all 151 UK local authorities for the proportion of pupils achieving the expected levels in English and maths combined - the council's best performance so far in the SATs tests sat by all 10-11 year olds.

At three schools - All Saints, Our Lady of Victories, St Mary's CofE and St Mary's RC - pupils scored 100 per cent and the schools were in the top 200 schools nationally. Pupils at St Mary's RC also scored 100 per cent.

Across the borough as a whole there were improvements in all subjects, and Wandsworth was above the national average for the expected level of performance for pupils of this age for the fourth year in a role. Improvements were particularly strong in writing.

About 95 per cent of schoolchildren made at least two levels of progress in English, and 92 per cent made at least two levels of progress in maths.

Results were also good at Key Stage 1 tests for younger primary schools pupils. There were improvements across all subjects at the expected level of performance, and for the first time Wandsworth was above the national averages in every subject. Improvements were strongest in reading and writing.

The SATs results follow the news in November that the borough ranks tenth in a Ofsted league table of the standard of primary schools in English local authorities.

The borough's primary children have an 86 per cent chance of attending a good or outstanding school - the tenth best figure in the country. Wandsworth was one of only three inner London boroughs to reach the top ten.

When secondary schools and special schools are taken into account, the figure is even better - 89 per cent of Wandsworth's secondary schools are rated 'good' or 'outstanding' by Ofsted and a hundred per cent of the special schools. This places the borough eighth out of 151 local authorities nationally for the quality of all its schools.

The council's education spokesman, Cllr Kathy Tracey, said:
"We want all our young people to achieve their full potential, and ensuring they get the best possible education, whatever their background, is key to this."
