Olympic Torch Stop For Wandsworth

Monday July 23rd 2012 is Wandsworth's moment in history

Places along the route of the London Olympic Torch's 70 day-long journey through the nation have been revealed, with Wandsworth named as one of its destinations

The first 74 locations on the 2012 Olympics torch relay route - starting at Land's End and finishing in the Olympic Stadium - will feature cities, towns and villages including Cardiff, Belfast, Liverpool, Nottingham and Oxford. The flame will leave Cornwall on Saturday May 19th after its arrival from Greece and will travel for 12 hours a day, arriving at The Olympic Stadium on July 27th for the Opening Ceremony.

The search for torchbearers begins today. Lord Seb Coe, Chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic games, says the focus for choosing torch bearers will be on young people who have made a difference in their communities and the people who have helped them. He says he has no idea who will be the final bearer to take the flame into the Stadium.

The nomination for torchbearers starts at 11am on Wednesday May 18th - simply log on the London 2012 website from this time. "It will be a 70-day journey of celebration," says Lord Coe.
