After temporarily shelving the project while the Olympic and Paralympic Games were being staged, engineers working for Southern Gas Networks will be returning to Wandsworth High Street to carry out major works from Monday, September 17.

The works are scheduled to last 19 weeks and are due to be completed at the end of January 2013.

The engineers are working on a large gas main that runs from Garratt Lane across Wandsworth High Street and into Ram Street.

The works will be completed in 11 phases. Phase one will require excavations outside the post office in Garratt Lane, outside TK Maxx on Wandsworth High Street and in Ram Street at the junction with Barchard Street.

This phase of the project, which is due to last from September 17 until October 12 will involve the closure of the bus lane on Garratt Lane, a traffic lane in Wandsworth High Street and the closure of the southbound lane in Ram Street. The bus stops outside the post office and TK Maxx will be suspended.

Ram Street and Wandsworth High Street are part of the Transport for London (TfL) Road Network and therefore the works and traffic management on these roads fall under TfL's control.

The council's transport spokesman Cllr Russell King said: "It is important that these works are completed as quickly as possible in order to minimise disruption for the travelling public.

"As Wandsworth High Street is a red route, Transport for London is responsible for ensuring the gas company and its contractors stick to the agreed schedule.

"But we will also be keeping a very close eye on progress and if there are any unnecessary delays we will insist on immediate action to get things back on track."

To ensure the works are completed as quickly as possible and have the least impact on residents and businesses, the council and TfL have instructed the gas company to carry out its works seven days a week.

However to ensure that residents do not suffer undue noise disturbance, there will be restrictions on these works.

• Monday to Friday - 8am to 10pm (no noisy works to take place after 6pm).
• Saturday - 8am to 4pm (no noisy works after 1pm).
• Sunday - 9am to 1pm (no noisy works at all on these days).
