A major route linking the centre of Wandsworth with Southfields is to be dug up for the next year and a half.

Utility company SGN is replacing ageing gas mains on Buckhold Road with new plastic pipes with the work carried out in stages by its contractor, Forefront Utilities

Each phase will involve traffic restrictions, including road closures, temporary traffic lights, and bus diversions.

The project began this Monday (12 May) and will continue for 18 months with breaks during the winter and the Wimbledon tennis tournament.

The first phase will involve temporary traffic lights between Neville Gill Close and number 55 Buckhold Road. Further phases will continue until autumn 2025, including a full road closure later in the summer between Wandsworth High Street and Southside shopping centre, opposite Hardwicks Square.

You can find details of each phase of the works, the specific traffic arrangements, and a map of the diversion routes on SGN’s website.

Residents and businesses on Buckhold Road are being warned to prepare for delays, changes to access and road layouts, and temporary suspensions of bus services in some locations. SGN has committed to maintaining access to properties at all times and will be working extended hours and weekends where needed to complete the job as quickly and safely as possible.

The council plans a number of mitigation measures to limit the disruption including monitoring the road network and providing real-time feedback to SGN and requiring that traffic management zones remain within legally defined safe limits.

In addition, it will be working with TfL and other utility companies to prevent overlapping work and imposing fines for unsafe working or if the works overrun their agreed schedule.

Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, said, “We know how frustrating utility roadworks can be – especially on a major route like Buckhold Road. This is not council work, but we are doing everything we can to hold SGN to account and ensure that disruption is kept to the absolute legal minimum.”
