Transport for London (TfL) has announced the revised routes bus services during the closure of Wandsworth Bridge for 10 weeks.

All the routes that currently cross the bridge will no longer do so from 24 July. This includes routes 29, C3 and 295.

It is understood that these will terminate on the Fulham side and passengers are being advised to walk across the bridge to connect with services in Wandsworth. However, bus stops TD and TM, the closest ones to the southside of the bridge, will be closed. The walk from the Townmead Road bus stop in Fulham to the bus stop on Swandon Way is nearly half a mile and estimated to take 9 minutes via Wandsworth Roundabout.

An additional temporary bus route, 728, will run between Fulham Broadway and Wandsworth Town centre via Battersea Bridge every 20 minutes between 5.10am and midnight.

The N28 night bus will be diverted over Battersea Bridge and, for the first four days of the works, will terminate at Clapham Junction station rather than in the centre of Wandsworth. From 29 July to the end of September it will terminate at Wandsworth Sainsbury’s

While the repairs are being carried out to the bridge it will remain open for pedestrians and cyclists but, due to limited space, cyclists will need to dismount and wheel their bikes across.

Although traffic is usually around 20% lower during the summer holidays, significant congestion is expected in the area. Bus users are being encouraged to consider other formers of travel such as riverboat services and Santander Bike Hire schemes.

Alternative river crossings using the nearby Thames bridges at Putney, Kew, Chiswick, Battersea and Chelsea are expected to be difficult at peak periods. The beginning of the closure will coincide with strike action on the tube and trains.

Wandsworth Council has not allowed any pre-planned roadworks on the approaches to any of the borough’s river bridges for the duration of the works.

We asked TfL if it felt additional bus provision on the south of the river was adequate but have yet to receive a response.
