Wandsworth Town Hall has been lit up in yellow and blue, the colours of Ukraine, and the country’s flag has been flying outside as an expression of solidarity with the people of that country in their struggle against invasion.

Council leader Cllr Ravi Govindia said, “We wish to show our support for the brave people of Ukraine.

“We will illuminate the town hall in honour of this proud nation and would like any Ukrainian nationals living in Wandsworth to know that our thoughts are with them and their families.”

The Mayor of Wandsworth Council, Cllr Richard Field, has written to the Ukrainian ambassador to offer the best wishes of the people of Wandsworth during the ongoing crisis.

In his letter to Ambassador Vadym Prystaiko, he praises the resilience and bravery of the people of Ukraine in their battle to protect their country’s independence, democracy and freedom.

“The good people of Wandsworth stand ‘shoulder to shoulder’ with me as their Mayor in support of your country and the stoic heroism of your people and your President Volodymr Zelenskyy,” he writes.

“We have been proud to demonstrate our unity with your country and to fly your flag over the Wandsworth Town Hall and to floodlight the building in the sovereign colours of Ukraine.

“Our thoughts and prayers in our community are with your people during this difficult time.”

The council has illuminated Wandsworth Town Hall in the colours of the Ukrainian flag, and will continue to fly the flag on the town hall flagpole as the crisis continues.

If you are a resident with friends and family in Ukraine and need information or support about what is happening, the council is advising you to contact the Ukrainian Embassy.
