Winter Warmers Campaign on Digital Radio

Leonard Cheshire centres in Wandsworth spread the word

Wireless Radio DJ Esta Charkham helped spread the word to keep warm at the  Gwynneth Morgan and Resource Centres in Wandsworth this week, launching a Winter Warmer campaign.

Visitors at both centres were handed digital radios to keep track of the temperature and listen for toasty tips while receiving blankets, gloves and heat packs.

As part of the Leonard Cheshire Disability initiative funded by Wandsworth Council Public Health and supported by St George's Healthcare NHS Trust, regulars took part in stay warm workshops becoming more temperature savvy.

William J Gallagher, Randall Close Resource Centre service manager, said: ‘This is an exciting collaboration for us. The idea is we give people who use our services a radio so they can stay connected in the cold snap and listen to familiar radio shows like Esta’s giving advice on exercise and keeping warm to music.

‘We want to reach out to as many people in the community as we can and have a personal fitness instructor on hand for six weeks to keep people motivated. We hope the Winter Warmer campaign will replicate the success Access to Wellbeing initiative.

‘I would like to say a big thank you to Wandsworth Council Public Health for funding the project.’

Cynthia Fairbairn is a regular visitor to Randall Close. She said: ‘I like the idea of exercising while I listen to Esta on my new radio. It has been fun to take part in the Winter Warmer and it is a good way to make people aware about the dangers of the cold.’
