Tony Arbour Becomes Chair Of London Assembly

The member for South West constituency had been deputy chairman

Tony Arbour has been appointed as the new chairman of the London Assembly.

Jennette Arnold, Labour, has chaired the assembly for last year with Mr Arbour, Conservative, as the deputy chairman.

Tony Arbour lost his Conservative seat to the Green Party in Hampton Wick in the recent local elections.

A veteran local councillor, Tony Arbour was first elected as a Conservative councillor to Richmond in 1968. He has been a member of the London Assembly since 2000.

Recently (see picture of Mr. Arbour in Chiswick) he has been active in the campaign against the Cycle Superhighway 9 to which he is opposed in its current form.

Ms Arnold, who will now take the role of deputy chairman, praised the work of the assembly over the last 12 months.

She said: “We have got to be proud, we have got to be courageous and we have got to continue to scrutinise.”
