Weather Presenter Receives Award From Wandsworth Mayor

Sian Welby recognised for supporting local disabled people

Channel 5's weather presenter Sian Welby has been presented with an award from the Mayor of Wandsworth for her role in supporting the disabled and elderly in her home borough.

She was recognised for her creativity and commitment in raising awareness through the media of the dangers cold temperatures pose to society’s most vulnerable people. 

Sian, who is also a sports reporter for several broadcasters, has been the celebrity face and voice of a campaign called ‘Keep Well, Keep Warm’ since 2013.

The initiative is run by the Leonard Cheshire Disability Randall Close Resource Centre in Battersea, in partnership with Wandsworth Borough Council’s Department of Public Health, the Police and Fire Services in Wandsworth, and The Wimbledon Foundation.

“Despite it seeming like a mild Christmas in the capital this year, most of the call outs and problems occur when the temperatures are between two and eight degrees,” Sian explains.

“I am honoured to receive the award for playing a role in encouraging people to look out for one another through the campaign.”

“I am happy that Leonard Cheshire Disability has seen a marked decrease in winter deaths in Wandsworth since the campaign started, but we must stay vigilant.”

The Mayor of Wandsworth, Cllr Nicola Nardelli, awards a special badge to members of the community that are dedicated volunteers.

She said: “The boost that Sian has given the Keep Well, Keep Warm campaign in Wandsworth over the past two years has undoubtedly saved lives and I’m proud to present her with this badge in recognition of her efforts.”
