SW15's Shocking Child Poverty Rates

26 per cent of children living in poverty

The Campaign to End Child Poverty this week released its Child Poverty statistics and map of Britain. Wandsworth ranks as mid-range among London boroughs for its level of children living in poverty. Tower Hamlets rated the highest with a huge 57 per cent – the highest in the country - while the outer London boroughs of Kingston and Richmond are running at 16 and 12 per cent respectively at the lower end  of the scale.
 
The specific breakdown for Wandsworth is as follows:
 
East Putney     19%
Fairfield     22%
Roehampton     40%
Southfields     21%
Thamesfield     7%
West Hill     36%
West Putney     27%
 
Four million children - one in three - are currently living in poverty in the UK according to the End Child Poverty Campaign. This is one of the highest rates in the industrialised world.
 
“Poverty can have a profound impact on the child, their family, and the rest of society. It often sets in motion a deepening spiral of social exclusion, creating problems in education, employment, mental and physical health and social interaction,” says the Campaign.
