Match report by Doug Shaw
Never say die cricket by doughty Putney tail-enders saw Putney win a game they were rarely in by one wicket with a ball to spare.
Ham started sedately against metronomic bowling by Trollip who once again showed great control to earn figures of 2-22 off his ten. 40 for none became 137 for 6 thanks to smart catching in the slips from Shaw and Woudstra (above his head, both feet off the ground). Ham's number held the innings together and aided by Scott (27) at eight took them beyond 200. Adil bowled very steadily and got 4-56. Racchit was steady for his 1-30 off ten.
With the weather closing in, Shaw and Lilja fashioned a five an over start but 40 for none became 102-7 off 24 as Putney seemed bemused by whether to go for the win or merely win on run rate as the rain came. Two intervals for heavy rain ensured a gloomy finish but who could've predicted that the last three would score more than double the last seven!
Aided by the openers bowling straight through, Stewart Brennan (46) and Julian Day (26) got us to 146-8 and Stew was out at 181-9. But in strode Brian (22*), who has made increasing valuable contributions these past few games to join Ben Brook (22*). In the gathering gloom they gave no chances as the put on 36 to win the game, perhaps to the surprise of every one except themselves! They ran their singles, Brian hit a career first six and the last over saw five needed. No sweat.
