Alf Jessiman was Mayor in the '80s and passed away recently
Councillors have paid tribute to former Mayor of Wandsworth Alf Jessiman who passed away recently.
Alf served on the council from 1978 to 1994, representing the Conservative party in Furzedown Ward.
He was Mayor of Wandsworth from 1986 to 1987 and Deputy Mayor from 1982 to 1983.
His town hall career included spells on ten different committees including housing policy, social services, education planning and transport and technical services.
Away from the town hall Alf and his wife Maria founded Eveline Day Nurseries which operate across Wandsworth and Merton.
Council leader Ravi Govindia said, “I worked alongside Alf for many years and witnessed the passion and insight he brought to local government. He was a big influence at the town hall and played a pivotal role in the private housing improvement programmes which transformed so many of the inadequate homes which used to be a feature of the borough.
“He will be sadly missed and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”
