Who Wants to Be the New Councillor in Sands End?

Meet the candidates from the three main parties

As well as the General Election on 8 June, there will also be by-elections in two local wards, Sands End in the south of Fulham and Avonmore and Brook Green in Hammersmith.

In Sands End, the candidates are:

Jackie Borland, Conservative Party
Ray Burnet, Liberal Democrats
Ann Rosenberg, Labour Party

Jackie Borland says: " I was brought up across the river in Wandsworth Common, I've lived in Fulham for 6 years and my family now live in Hammersmith. I work for a small family-run residential property development business and we deal mainly with properties in and around the H&F borough.

"I'm honoured to have been selected as the Conservative candidate for Sands End and, if elected, will dedicate my time to helping the residents where I can and work to improve what is already a fantastic area to live and work in."

Jackie says she will work with residents to provide genuinely affordable housing and tackle the scandal of the empty homes on Watermeadow Court on Townmead Road which Labour continue to leave empty.

She supports the campaign for a Crossrail 2 interchange at Imperial Wharf and will continue to campaign for improvements to the junction of Wandsworth Bridge Road, Carnwath Road and Townmead Road, and wants to create a cleaner, greener Sands End, saying Labour are failing Sands End residents; fly tipping is up 53% whilst tree planting is down 77%.

She says: " Residents deserve cleaner streets and more investment in our parks. We will always put Sands End residents first."

Sands End resident Ray Burnet is involved with many local charities, raising substantial funds for Maggie's at Charing Cross Hospital, local homeless, and the Shooting Star care for terminally ill children.

He says: " You can often see me around and about in the ward and you may bump into me in local hostelries such as the Sands End. You might even recognise me! My day job is as an actor, and I have appeared in Downton Abbey, Bond films and Bridget Jones to name a but few."

Ray joined the Liberal Democrats after last year's referendum and says " The Liberal Democrats are the only party that is committed to having another referendum after Brexit negotiations have taken place. It is clearly right that the people should have the final say on the Brexit terms and not to allow a stitch up by a small group of politicians.

"On local issues, it is clear to me that the ward is not being looked after by the Labour controlled Borough in terms of broken promises to its elderly. Labour have not replaced the Sands End Community Centre which was sold off to private developers. The nearest Police Station is now in Hammersmith, after Fulham Police Station has been handed over to a Free School! Free crèche facilities have been lost too.

"I will fight on behalf of the ward’s residents to reverse this disgraceful state of affairs and to make the area safer and more fun, building on initiatives like the new beach in place of the smelly, noisy car auction."

Ann Rosenberg has lived in Sands End and been an active member of the community for 40 years and says she joined Hammersmith and Fulham Labour last year after seeing what they have achieved in the three years they have run the council.

Ann was part of the action group which campaigned passionately to save the Sands End Community Centre in Broughton Road and is now working with the council to open a new centre in South Park. She says: "I'm absolutely delighted to say that our Labour Council have found £3.6 million to replace what was taken away from us - a new Sands End Arts and Community centre."

Ann is a founding member of the Peterborough Road & Area Residents Association, or PRARA, and after campaigning against the Thames Tunnel, is now Chair of the Thames Tunnel Community Liaison Working Group set up to protect local people.

She says she is on the side of local residents and by voting for her, you get to send the government a very clear message to stop demolishing Charing Cross Hospital and closing our A&E.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council says yellow poll cards for the by-elections in the Avonmore & Brook Green and Sands End wards are being sent out separately.

As with the General Election, the poll card is for information only, and you do not need it to vote. As long as you are registered, you can simply give the polling station staff your name and address. All polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm.
