Libraries Week is run by the professional body the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) and aims to help people discover the range of different things people can do in their local library, including reading, learning, creative activities and more.

Highlights during the week in Wandsworth include special Baby Rhyme Times and children’s story times, a group reading session, poetry readings with Emma Simon and Giles Turnbull, a chance to meet local author Beryl Kingston, performances of two David Mamet plays and Living Libraries – a drop-in session at the Wandsworth Heritage Service showing how libraries have changed over the years.

The council awarded an eight-year contract to Greenwich Leisure Ltd (GLL) in 2013 to manage the borough’s 11 libraries and heritage service, and since then has been working in close partnership with the charitable social enterprise.

The Council has been investing in library buildings, greater efficiencies and a better service to the public including new online resources, cloud-based printing and photocopying, more e-books, shorter waiting times for reserved items, online learning sessions and a comprehensive programme of events.

Councillors have approved plans for a new Northcote Library and there will be new libraries for York Gardens and Roehampton as part of major estate regeneration schemes. Work is expected to start soon on a new Wandsworth Town library as part of the regeneration of Wandsworth town centre.
