Estimated cost to evict 120 squatters from Williams Gardens around £10,000
Early September saw the unwanted invasion of 120 squatter to the recently emptied MoD properties at Williams Gardens. The MoD had emptied the flats for refurbishment in readiness for returning servicemen from Afghanistan and families.
A clerical error in obtaining the eviction notice gave the squatters a two week reprieve but last weekend the squatters were given 24 hours to quit and they have all moved out leaving no damage but a mess!
The buildings have now been boarded up and the refurbishment is due to start in April 2009 but in the meantime there properties will be under 24 hour guard to ensure no return of unwanted visitors.
Justine Greening the local MP said: “One of the big issues we have been debating in Parliament is the lack of good accommodation for servicemen and servicewomen. It’s surprising that the site was left long enough for this to happen. The key now is that they upgrade it for those people who deserve it.”
