due for refurbishment for soldiers returning from Middle East
Members from the Putney Forum had voiced concerns regarding squatters in the MoD properties Williams Gardens back in mid August. Now their worst nightmares have occurred - following the eviction of 120 squatters from Balham yesterday it appears they have simply packed their goods and moved in to more than half of the 42 MoD flats!
The forces families who had been living there had moved out to allow major refurbishment of the two bedroom flats. A spokesman for De fence Estates, an arm of the MoD, said:
"The presence of these squatters is delaying comprehensive refurbishment work to bring these properties up to the standard our troops and their families deserve."
Marcin, a 28-year-old from Poland, told The Guardian reporter Helen Pidd:"There are people here from all over the world, Italians, Spaniards, South Africans, Portuguese."
It is believed that the MoD has already applied to the courts to have the squatters evicted but it took over 5 months for Lambeth to evict them from the squats in Limerick Court.
