Tfl staff on hand to answer your question
Residents and businesses will have another opportunity to ask questions about local travel arrangements when Putney Bridge closes for essential repairs this summer at a Q&A session being held on Tuesday 24th June at the Putney Exchange shopping centre.
Staff from Transport for London will be at the Exchange between 10am and 4pm on Tuesday to answer queries about how local bus services will operate while the repairs are being carried out. Council staff will also be on hand to answer questions about the work timetable.
The bridge will be closing to all vehicle traffic from Monday, July 14 for approximately three months. This is to allow £1.5m of essential repairs to be completed to protect its internal structure from damage caused by water penetration.
For the duration of the works buses will be operating a shuttle service from both ends. This means that passengers will have to cross the bridge on foot to carry on their journeys, but TfL has confirmed that they are putting arrangements in place to ensure people are charged only once.
Cyclists will also be able to cross the bridge but they will need to dismount and wheel their bikes across. Drivers will need to find alternative routes.
The July 14 start date was chosen so that the closure would not impact on the Wimbledon tennis championships nor on important weekend maintenance work being carried out to the District Line in June and July. The works have also been planned so that the Prudential RideLondon cycling event which is being staged on Sunday, August 10 can be accommodated.
The decision to close the bridge to all traffic – instead of a partial closure – was backed by a substantial majority of residents and businesses during the public consultation last year. The public’s preferred option was getting the job done in the shortest possible time and at the lowest cost to taxpayers.
