Dear Resident,
Elliott School Investment Proposals - Consultation Closes this Friday, 25th May
Thanks to a great new head teacher, Mark Phillips, and his staff, Elliott School is now really turning around. It had fantastic 2011 exam results, with 62% of students gaining 5 or more A* - C grades at GCSE including English and Mathematics, making it one of the 100 best performing schools in the country. As a governor, I've also been running a career mentoring programme in the school. Supported by Mr Phillips, his staff, and the governing body, the school is set to become an academy this September which will be another step forward, but the school building desperately needs proper investment.
What about investment in Elliott School building?
The school’s investment plans will preserve the best elements of the existing listed building, improve the school’s facilities and finally give Putney parents a great local secondary school for their children.
In spite of Elliott’s large site, currently the school’s sports provision does not meet DfE or Sport England requirements and the school already use off site playing fields. The proposal is that some land will be sold to provide investment for a new 4 court sports hall and a new 3 court multi use games area for a range of sports. I have spoken to many current pupils and they are looking forward to getting a better school and better facilities. The facilities will also be available for use by the local community.
I'm also working with local residents, including The Putney Society, Manor Fields’ residents and the Council to make sure that any residential development on the site is in keeping with our local area.
How can you help Elliott School get the investment it needs? Feedback to Elliott School
This investment is vital for a secure and successful future for Elliott School which is why it has the support of the head teacher, staff and governors. Without it, we risk losing the school site altogether as fewer and fewer parents choose the school. Have your say in the consultation process by filling out the official feedback form on the school’s website www.elliott-school.org.uk. It closes this Friday 25th May.
The campaign supposedly aiming to “save Elliott” is union-backed by Wandsworth & Battersea TUC and the GMB union and seems to be an existing campaign that has switched from campaigning against a Battersea school investment to ours. Their campaign goes against what those of us involved with Elliott today feel the school needs, and also what so many parents locally have told me they want for their children. We all want to see a fantastic local Putney secondary school on the site for local children to go to, instead of having to get children in a car, on a tube or on a bus to travel to schools further afield.
As the local MP and a governor at Elliott, I am passionate about seeing the school improved. That's why I support these proposals for investment. It is important that local residents are also involved so please take a look and have your say!
Best wishes,
Rt Hon Justine Greening MP
