Hounslow Council has begun operating its refuse collection vehicles on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), a renewable fuel derived from used cooking oil. The move marks the start of a phased transition to cleaner energy sources for the borough’s waste and recycling services.
The announcement confirms the implementation of a pledge first outlined in March as part of the Council’s Climate Emergency Plan. While the commitment to reduce emissions from diesel-powered vehicles was previously publicised, this update signals the beginning of operational changes.
HVO fuel is considered a more sustainable alternative to traditional diesel, offering significantly lower carbon emissions and improved air quality. The Council says the switch will help modernise its fleet while reducing the environmental impact of its operations.
The full investment includes the introduction of 50 new vehicles between now and 2028, designed to meet future recycling demands and accommodate population growth. The rollout places Hounslow among a growing number of UK local authorities adopting renewable fuels for municipal services.
Cabinet members Shivraj Grewal and Katherine Dunne described the change as a step forward in both service delivery and environmental responsibility, highlighting the role of local government in leading sustainable innovation.
This marks the first confirmed operational use of HVO in Hounslow’s refuse fleet, following earlier policy commitments. Further updates on fleet expansion and emissions data are expected as the programme continues.
