Tories gain across London and in Hounslow Borough
In London Constituency there was no change in the number of seats that the parties hold in the European Assembly. The Conservatives got 27.4% of the overall vote up by just 0.6% The other two main parties saw their votes fall with Labour down by 3.5%
Big gainers were the Green Party who pipped UKIP to fourth place. Contrary to the trend seen elsewhere in the country UKIP saw their vote fall in London.
Turnout was 1,751,026 from an electorate of 5,257,624 which is almost exactly a third. This is an historical low but better than some were predicting.
Thanks to a rise of 3.3% in their share of votes in Hounslow Borough, the Conservatives took the lead over Labour whose share of the vote fell by 4.1%. The Liberal Democrats also experienced a fall of 4% and the UK Independence Party was down by 1%. The sharp fall in the Lib Dems vote allowed UKIP to take third place in the borough. The Green Party were the main other gainers with a rise of 1.9% in their vote.
The voting in Ealing Borough saw Labour maintain a slight lead over the Conservatives although their share of the vote has fallen sharply. The fall in the Labour vote corresponds to the gains made by Jan Jananayagam, an independent candidate from the Tamil community. The rise in the Conservative vote seems to correspond with the fall in the Liberal Democrat vote. The BNP made only small gains and UKIP saw a decline in their share of the vote.
There is no separate seat for the Hounslow or Ealing areas. The votes in these boroughs are counted in the London-wide contest.
