Council report last year concluded that the centre had reached 'the end of its useful life'
January 30, 2025
Hounslow Council has revealed that there were over 800 responses to a survey it held on the future of the Brentford Fountain Leisure Centre.
It was announced last year that intention was to demolish the existing facility and the consultation, launched on 6 November 2024, sought views on what people would like to see replace it and where the new centre should be situated.
The survey closed last Friday (24 January).
In addition to the survey, the council says has been conducting a series of discussion sessions with local organisations about their views on what should replace the existing centre.
Consultation with interested parties is to continue over the next few weeks with a report then to be made to Hounslow Council’s cabinet which will also be publicly available. The council says there will be further engagement with the public as the project progresses with details published on its community engagement platform, Let's Talk, at Brentford Fountain Leisure Centre Survey | Let's Talk Hounslow.
A report was presented to the council last year that the centre on Chiswick High Road was at the end of its useful life and needed £285,000 to bring it up to minimum health and safety standards to remain open. A sum just below £1million was also set aside for a study into future options for the centre.
Cllr Salman Shaheen, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Public Spaces, said, “Over 800 submissions is an incredible response and is testament to the significant role Brentford Fountain Leisure Centre plays in our community. I want to thank all those who have taken part so far, because this feedback will be invaluable as we look to better meet the needs of our residents.
“The existing leisure centre remains open and there is not yet a date set for closure. This is the beginning of a comprehensive community engagement process aimed at transforming our leisure centre into a modern facility that truly reflects the desires and requirements of the people it serves.”
At this stage most observers believe that the most likely outcome is a scheme similar to the one which recently received planning permission in the borough of Ealing for the Gurnell Leisure centre in which a new facility was enabled by the building of housing on the site.
