Borough Awarded Funding To Help End Rough Sleeping

Wandsworth will receive money to support and resettle people sleeping on the street

Wandsworth Council is one of 42 councils who will receive funding to help reduce rough sleeping. This follows the announcement in December that eleven areas throughout the UK would be piloting Somewhere Safe to Stay assessment hubs.

The Rapid Rehousing Pathway will be awarding funds to a further 42 council across the UK, including Wandsworth, to help people sleeping on the streets - as well as those at risk of rough sleeping - to access support and settled housing.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government will be funding the scheme.

Housing Minister Heather Wheeler MP said, “I am pleased to announce further funding for local areas to tackle rough sleeping. The cash will be used to train navigators who can support rough sleepers in getting off the streets.

Speaking during a visit to a homeless charity in Kent, Ms Wheeler added, "We still have got an awful lot more to do, in this day and age nobody should be sleeping on the streets at night.

"We want to make sure that people have somewhere safe to go."

The Pathway brings together four government policy interventions to help tackle rough sleeping and homelessness. This will include the Somewhere Safe to Stay assessment hubs, supported lettings, dedicated local lettings agencies for rough sleepers and teams of Navigators who will work as points of contact to help get people off the streets.

We have contacted Wandsworth Council for details on the amount of funding the borough is due to receive.
