A chance to see how the big project is shaping up

There’s a chance to see how the restoration of Gunnersbury Park is shaping up, with a behind-the-scenes tour on Saturday 7 May.

You can meet the team behind the renovation works of the much-loved park and museum and finding out what works are being done and where and it will offer an exclusive peek at the transformation unfolding.

There will be an opportunity for those joining the tour to see the Large Mansion building and principal rooms and take a look at the archaeological finds uncovered during the works so far.

Work began late last year on the multi-million pound restoration of the grounds and buildings, which is situated off Popes Lane, Brentford. Once completed, the £40m regeneration of the site will be home to a first-class sports hub with indoor and outdoor facilities.

It will also boast landscaped gardens and the rooms of the historic Large Mansion will be restored to their former glory for all ages to enjoy as well as a museum that will show off the history of Gunnersbury, which was once owned by the Rothschild family.

The project, which is jointly funded by Hounslow Council, Ealing Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund, has also been boosted by charitable grants.

Restoration will shine a light on the history of the area, its agricultural heritage, industrial past, urbanisation and multicultural wealth.

The tour this weekend will give people an opportunity to see how these transformations are taking place.

There are just a few places left on Saturday’s tour but advance booking is essential if you are to guarantee any of the remaining places.

There will be no access to the tour on the day.

• The tour on Saturday 7 May is not suitable for young people under 16 and due to the continuing works, the site is currently not fully wheelchair accessible.

A planning application has been submitted for a major redevelopment of the sports and leisure facilities in Gunnersbury Park.

The proposal is to build a two-storey Sports Hub building with basement on the ‘redundant’ bowling green (between the car park and the children’s playground). This will contain a 5 court sports hall, multi-use studios and associated changing facilities, cafe community room, archive store and office accommodation.

The building will be modern in style with a high-roofed multi-use sports hall on the path side and on the field side a café, eight changing rooms, showers and rooms for officials, with locker space in the corridors. On the floor above will be two multi-use studio spaces, offices and other rooms.

Tennis courts will be laid out with floodlighting which will also illuminate the artificial grass pitches. There will be an out-door gym, distance markers and a trim trail to help people use the park for exercise.
