As the historic palace launches start of £3.8 million restoration project
This March, Fulham Palace, the historic home of the Bishops of London, has launched a new fundraising campaign to help support the restoration project to renew and restore the Palace, brick by brick. The brickwork within the Tudor Quadrangle is over 500 years old, and the general public are encouraged to sponsor a brick, enabling visitors to enjoy the Palace for centuries to come.
Traditional Tudor bricks are available to sponsor for £20 whilst special limited edition Tudor bricks are £50. By sponsoring a brick, visitors will have the opportunity to sign their name on a brick which will go into the walls of the Palace and be a very special part of the restoration project. The sponsorship will, quite literally, help build Fulham Palace’s future.
There will also be a series of public events and open days throughout the restoration project, including dedicated ‘Sponsor a Brick’ events where visitors can meet heritage specialists and learn how each brick is made by hand and finished in a wood-fired kiln so the repairs will blend seamlessly into the Palace’s ancient walls.
This Sponsor a Brick campaign is an integral part of our £3.8 million restoration project, Discovering the Bishop of London's Palace at Fulham. The restoration is supported by National Lottery players through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), which awarded the Fulham Palace Trust just under £2 million.
Thanks to the generous support of a number of trusts, foundations and individuals, the Trust is now only £145,000 away from raising the match funding needed for the project to be completed as planned. The donations raised through this campaign will help the Trust get even closer to that goal.
Coinciding with the launch of the ‘Sponsor a Brick’ programme, work commences this month on restoring the iconic Tudor Quadrangle. The brickwork repairs are a delicate undertaking, carried out by skilled craftspeople, using traditional techniques and represent a major step forward in restoring the Tudor Courtyard to its former glory. This is just the beginning of a fascinating and exciting year for the Palace.
To sponsor a brick or find out more about the restoration project and upcoming open days, visit www.fulhampalace.org or ask at Fulham Palace for more details. The Sponsor a Brick campaign will run until April 2019 or until all the bricks are sponsored.
The Sponsor a Brick campaign is supported by H.G. Matthews, Traditional Brickmakers since 1923.
