Legendary Bollywood star, Rajit Kapur hits Watermans stage with Pune Highway, a dark comedy thriller in English, written and directed by Rahul Da Cunha.

Legendary Bollywood star Rajit Kapur is appearing in PUNE HIGHWAY at Watermans next week.  This will be a rare opportunity to see Rajit Kapur perform live, as the actor will soon be appearing in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film, Guzaarish releasing nationwide in November.

Kapur was recently seen in Deepti Naval’s Do Paisi Ki Dhoop Char Aane Ki Barish (2009) and Well Done Abba by the renowned Indian film director, Shyam Benegal (shown on Channel 4, 1 Nov 2010).

In fact, Kapur has been a favourite Benegal and began his career with the seminal film, Suraj Ka Satwan Ghoda (Seventh Horse of the Sun, 1992) playing the narrator, Manek Mullah who tells stories of ostensibly three different women – but are really three different perspectives on the same person. Since then he has starred in practically all of Benegal’s film, playing the lead roles in the trilogy: Mammo (1994) Sardari Begum (1996) & Zubeida (2001).

Kapur has been commended for his role in the Indian- South African co-production, The Making of the Mahatma (1996), directed by Benegal, in which he plays the main protagonist. The film won him the National Award for Best Actor & National Award for Best Feature film in English It was based on a book, The Apprenticeship of a Mahatma by the academic &  anti-apartheid activist, Fatima Meer (who also wrote the screenplay).

He has also appeared alongside Aamir Khan in Ghulam (1998) playing his brother, Jai in the Indian inspiration of Elia Kazan’s masterpiece, On the Waterfront.

When not appearing in films, Rajit is passionate about theatre and together with fellow artists, Shernaz Patel and Rahul Da Cunha formed Rage Productions to produce ‘good contemporary theatre.  To date they have created and performed around twenty productions and continue to be at the leading edge of theatre creativity in India. This is their first visit to the UK and is a great opportunity for Waterman audiences to see Kapur perform live on stage with fellow actors, Ashwin Mushran, Shankar Sachdev, Bugs Bhargava Krishna and Yamini Namjoshi.
