Join World Bicycle Relief For A Tour de France Themed Charity Event

At the Telegraph Pub on Sunday 6th July

This summer the Tour de France comes to the UK and Putney-based charity World Bicycle Relief UK will be holding a fundraising and social event to celebrate on the 6th July. Come down to the Telegraph Pub, Putney Heath from 10am to 6pm to watch the race on the big screen as the world’s fastest bike riders tackle Yorkshire’s toughest hills.

Partnering with local bike shop Velosport, there will be informal rides around Richmond Park, great food and drink and a prize raffle. All the fundraising will go towards mobilizing students in Zambia with sustainable bicycle transportation.

When choosing a bike for the Tour de France the £95 Buffalo bicycle wouldn’t be your first choice. It’s a utility workhorse made from heavy duty steel with a rack that carries over 100kg. But the Buffalo isn’t designed for racing, it’s a tool that can be used to revolutionise the lives of thousands of individuals and rural communities in Africa.

World Bicycle Relief is the charity that has distributed over 180,000 of these especially designed, locally assembled bicycles to students to enable them to access education, healthcare workers so they can visit more patients and entrepreneurs so they can build livelihoods. In many communities where the majority of people lack reliable transportation a rugged bike is a lifeline allowing them to travel four times further with five times the load. Just £95 puts a Buffalo Bicycle into the hands of a student in Zambia.

Lucy Lynch of Lytton Grove is one of the trustees of World Bicycle Relief and has witnessed first-hand the difference a buffalo bicycle makes in Zambia. Lucy said:
“When you see the distances that many girl students have to walk just to get to school it really drives home how much of a difference a reliable £95 bicycle can make. Not only does student attendance improve but they also achieve higher average grades and are less susceptible to harassment and early marriage. I’m really excited to be able to share this story at this event on the 6th July”
