Youngsters invited to compete in Young Performer of the Year 2009
This is a fantastic opportunity for singers, poets, dancers, musicians, bands, comedians and any other performers with an act suitable for the stage. You must be between 11 and 19 years old and either live or go to a school or youth club in Wandsworth.
The first round of auditions take place in October at Putney Arts Theatre and selected schools and youth clubs across the borough.
This year’s winner will pick up a cash prize of £300 and a tailored package of development opportunities, supported by Integrated Youth Services. This could take the form of recording studio time for a musician, or performance opportunities for a dance group.
Entrants will gain experience of auditioning and could end up performing for an audience of over 300 at the Young Performer 2009 Final.
Skills development workshops, specifically designed for Young Performer entrants, will hone participants’ performance skills - helping them to excel. These will take place during autumn half term at the award winning music venue Halo Bar, Battersea Arts Centre and the Royal Academy of Dance during autumn half term.
Last year over 100 young people took part in Young Performer, with street dance troupe Retaliation (pictured) scooping the first prize, leading to performance opportunities across the borough.
Comments from last year’s entrants include:
“Whether or not I get through to the final, Young Performer 2008 has taught me much about being a performer and I’m proud to have had this experience.”
“The BAC workshop really helped me build my confidence and I have increased the range of my vocals.”
