Organisers Confirm London-Surrey Cycle Classic Will Go Ahead

Disorder over the past few days will not affect plans for Sunday

The event is being organised by the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) and Transport for London as part of the Olympic test programme. It will replicate the route of next year's Olympic Road Race and cyclists will pass through Putney twice - meaning some roads will be closed from early in the morning until late afternoon.

Putney Bridge , Putney High Street , the Upper Richmond Road between Putney High Street and Priory Lane and Priory Lane itself will be closed from 4am on Sunday. Riders are expected to enter Putney via the bridge at around 9.10am and will pass through the town again along the same route around 12 noon. The roads are expected to reopen by 3pm. 

Hundreds of spectators are expected to come to Putney. The council and the Putney Partnership have jointly organised a day of fun activities, Cycle to Putney Day, to help spectators and local people enjoy the event.

The road closures are necessary to enable barriers to be erected and removed, the route to be cleaned and highway works necessary for the race to be carried out, such as removing traffic islands and signals. There will be no access to side roads adjoining the route from the route itself, but one-way roads adjoining the route will become two-way to enable access. Parking will not be allowed anywhere along the route from 8pm on Saturday evening until the roads are reopened on Sunday afternoon.

Circle Line trains are suspended for maintenance work, as are District Line trains from Edgware Road to Earls Court , and Hammersmith & City Line trains from Baker Street to Hammersmith. Mainline trains and District Line services from Earls Court to Wimbledon are running normally but bus services will be disrupted and those coming from the south will typically terminate at the Green Man on Putney Heath, a ten minute walk to the town centre.

St Mary's church next to Putney Bridge will host a BBQ and live music by the Cafe Racers and Velosport at 252 Upper Richmond Rd will host a 1km Turbo Challenge in aid of the National Autistic Society.

Visitors are encouraged to walk or cycle if possible. People cycling to the town are recommended to bring their own cycle locks to lock bikes securely. Suggested locations include the extensive railings on Putney Embankment, the railings on the raised section of Walkers Place and on-street hoops in the Upper Richmond Road and elsewhere. Please do not lock your bikes to the race barriers as they will be removed.
