Drop-in Session Arranged on London Surrey Cycle Classic

Find out how road closures for Olympic test race will affect you

People living along the route of the upcoming London Surrey Cycle Classic have been invited to a drop-in information session in Putney Library and will receive a further letter from Transport for London this weekend detailing road disruption during the August 14 event.

The session has been arranged at Putney Library so that local people can receive more information and quiz transport and Olympics officials about the event itself and the traffic impact. Go along on Wednesday July 27 any time between 2.30pm and 7.30pm.

The council has also announced details of a Cycle to Putney Day and family activities to entertain visitors expected to gather for the race.

The event is part of the London 2012 Organising Committee's (LOCOG) test programme for 2012 and features 148 world class cyclists from 21 different countries. It will replicate the route of next year's Olympic Road Race and cyclists will pass through Putney twice - meaning on the day of the race some roads will be closed from early in the morning until late afternoon.

Putney Bridge, Putney High Street, the Upper Richmond Road between Putney High Street and Priory Lane and Priory Lane itself will be closed from 4am on the day of the race. Riders are expected to enter Putney via the bridge at around 9.10am and will pass through the town again along the same route around noon. The roads are expected to reopen by 3pm.

The road closures are necessary to enable barriers to be erected and removed, the route to be cleaned and highway works necessary for the race, such as removing traffic islands and signals, to be carried out. There will be no access to side roads adjoining the route from the route itself, but one-way roads adjoining the route will become two-way to enable access. Parking will not be allowed anywhere along the route from 8pm on Saturday evening until the roads are reopened on Sunday afternoon. Bus routes will also be affected, but night buses will continue to operate on the route until 7am.

A map showing the affected roads, a map of the race route, details of bus routes affected, information for spectators and other information can be viewed at www.tfl.gov.uk/testevent. Residents can also call TfL on 0845 305 1234 for more information.

Cycle to Putney Day is a programme of cycle-related activities for cycling fans and families who live in the town or have travelled to Putney to watch the race.

Part of Lacy Road will be pedestrianised and highlights will include live music, sporting and fun activities, a bouncy castle, face painting, sample drinks and freebies, a Dr Bike stand offering maintenance and safety checks and advice and a barbecue and live music at St Mary's Church. More details on the event, as they become known, will be published on www.wandsworth.gov.uk/putney.

Cabinet member for environment and culture, Cllr Jonathan Cook, said, "We recognise this is a chance for Putney people to see a world-class sporting event for free, and want everyone to have a good time, but have been concerned about the impact this race will have on Putney and the disruption it will cause for residents and motorists. I would urge people to attend the drop-in session to ensure they know exactly what is in store and can plan accordingly."
