hailed a big success by Cllr Tracey
The council's Big Spring Clean initiative has been hailed a success after residents took advantage of the scheme to get rid of over 100 tonnes of junk that was cluttering up their homes and gardens.
Over the course of six days last week, the council collected more than 110 tonnes of unwanted bulky items from residents' homes free of charge.
These included sofas, mattresses, wardrobes, chairs, tables, children's toys and bagged up garden waste.
The aim of the initiative was to remove items that people were either unable or unwilling to take to the borough's two civic amenity sites in Smugglers Way and Cringle Street .
By removing these items free of charge, the council was not only able to help residents de-clutter their homes, but also reduce the likelihood of unwanted items like furniture and mattresses from being flytipped on the borough's streets.
Cabinet member for environment and public services Cllr Kathy Tracey said: "We knew that we would be picking up a lot of items that residents no longer wanted or had room for, but I don't think anyone reckoned that the final tally would be over 110 tonnes.
"This has been a hugely successful initiative, which has ensured that many items of old furniture and unwanted junk will not end up being flytipped on street corners or dumped in rivers or on commons and green spaces."
Many unwanted items can also be recycled. If you have anything that can be used again, like good quality furniture and bric-a-brac, please take them to your nearest charity shop. Local recycling banks cans also be used for clothes, shoes and books. To find your nearest site visit www.wandsworth.gov.uk/recycling
