with five mile sponsored walk
Wandsworth Rotarians and friends of Rotary recently completed a sponsored walk to raise cash for charity.
The Walk which raised over £700 for the work of Mercy Ships in and around Africa was organised by the six Rotary Clubs in Wandsworth - Balham, Battersea and Clapham, Battersea Park, Graveney, Putney and Tooting as part of their yearly fund raising appeals for local and international charities based in the UK.
The 5 mile walk along Thames Riverside started from Putney embankment, opposite the London Rowing Club boathouse, and took walkers through Hammersmith, Barnes, Mortlake, and Chiswick before ending at Kew green beside Kew Bridge, where a nice picnic rounded-off the challenging walk.
Among the walkers was the former Member of Parliament for Putney, Tony Colman and past mayor of Wandsworth, Councillor Leslie McDonnell, both members of the Rotary Club of Putney. (see photo)
At the end of the gruelling walk Tony Colman said, “it was an excellent way to show our support for a worthy cause”.
Every year Rotarians act as volunteers at many community events but, in addition, they chose to support the work of various charities with fundraising events. In 2005, Wandsworth Rotarians raised cash for the work of Hope and Homes for Children (www.hopeandhomes.org), a UK charity working to provide homes and families for orphans of war and disaster. “Rotarians will continue to support these excellent charities and hope that their work of alleviating the plight of those who are most disadvantaged and who cannot fight alone the effects of grinding poverty and diseases can and will go on for years to come”, concluded Tony Colman.
Since 1978, Mercy Ships’ fleet of hospital ships has impacted millions in developing nations. The vision of Mercy Ships is to bring hope and healing to the poor through providing free world-class health care and community development services.
