As Putney art students graduate
You don't have to trek to east London to see the exciting work being done by up-and-coming
artists in the capital.
It will be on your doorstep when a group of artists from Putney School of Art and Design's
diploma course exhibit together in Wandsworth Town from 7-12 July. Oil & Water is Wandsworth Town's newest independent contemporary art gallery with a keen
focus on local professional art. It showcases original paintings, original prints, limited edition prints,
sculpture and ceramics.
Original paintings, mixed media works,
screenprints and sculpture by eight artists
will be on display and available to buy at Oil
& Water contemporary art gallery.
The exhibition is the culmination of two
years of intensive practice at Putney's
prestigious art school and will showcase
exactly why southwest London remains a
hub for artistic development.
"It's exciting," said diploma course director
Jan Malaszek. "The artists have taken all
the approaches, skills and knowledge
gained from the course and gone on
something of a voyage into the unknown to produce work that is a definite personal
statement."
All of the artists have fitted the diploma course around varying work, family and personal
commitments to dedicate themselves to finding and fine-tuning their artistic voice.
Themes from national guilt to everyday walks will be explored in the exhibition alongside
pieces inspired by modern ruins, lost villages, ice skating and Bob Dylan songs.
The eight exhibiting artists are Philip Austin, Fenella Forbes, Louise Hunt, Anna Mayhew-Smith,
Agnieszka Mielcarek, Karen Rivlin, Anastasia Sevcova and David Williams.
The artists will be present at the gallery throughout the week and encourage anyone
looking to develop their own artistic talents to come and be inspired. The gallery's regular opening hours are Tuesday to Saturday 10.30am-5pm with a late opening
on Thursday until 8pm. Sunday's opening hours are 10.30am-4pm.
Putney School of Art and Design's diploma is a two-year part-time course providing specialist,
structured study for students interested in contemporary visual arts.
