Over 700 People Visited Roehampton Job Fair

More than 700 local people came to the council’s latest jobs fair on 30th January which showcased a range of new employment opportunities to the people of Roehampton.

Hosted by council leader Ravi Govindia and the Work Match recruitment team, the event brought more than 20 employers, career advice and personal finance services under one roof.
Roehampton is the focus of a major council-led regeneration project which aims to transform the town centre, improve housing and bring new shops and community services to the area.

Cllr Govindia said:
“There was a tremendous turn-out and I’m confident many of the applications will soon translate into new careers. If you’re unemployed but couldn’t make today’s event then do get in touch with our superb Work Match team. They work all year round to link unemployed Wandsworth residents with career opportunities whether that’s skills training, apprenticeships or a new job.

“This council is taking an increasing active role in helping local residents into work and I’m delighted to report that our unemployment rate has dropped significantly over the last year. Our efforts to attract new employers to Wandsworth are also yielding results and the local jobs market is expanding faster than just about anywhere else in London.

He continued:
“This jobs fair is part of a wider package of support for Roehampton which is an area we’re determined to improve. As well as employment initiatives we are delivering a major public health drive and investing millions of pounds to improve the town centre and local homes.

“Housing, employment, health and the quality of the local environment are connected issues which contribute to a community’s well-being. In Roehampton we are working very hard to improve all of these elements so local people have the best possible chance of reaching their potential.”

Latest figures released by the Office for National Statistics show the number of people in Wandsworth claiming job seekers allowance (JSA) fell from 6,225 in December 2012 to 4,983 in December 2013. Wandsworth now has the second lowest proportion of JSA claimants for an inner London borough at 2.2 per cent.
