Olympic rower from Putney backs the events
This year British Olympic rower Mathew Wells will be the event's ambassador. Mathew is part of the London 2012 Team GB rowing team. He lives in Putney and is passionate about encouraging the borough's families to enjoy sport together.
Mathew said: "It only seemed like yesterday that we were awarded the 2012 Games, yet here we are! It's great to see years of hard work, planning and collaboration in local communities finally come to fruition. The Get Active Wandsworth Festival demonstrates this coming together, and I urge everyone to get out there and try something new."
The Get Active Wandsworth Festival runs until September 30. It aims to get the whole borough moving regardless of age or ability and to leave a lasting legacy to the London 2012 Games. Last year 4,000 people enjoyed a wide range of free events and taster sessions.
The Mayor of Wandsworth, Cllr Jane Cooper, will officially launch the festival at the Wandsworth Schools Year 5 Mini Olympix event at Battersea Park Millennium Arena, at 10am on Wednesday April 18.
If you are a sports club, physical activity provider, school, university group or health organisation and you can put on a free taster day or session between April 18 and September 30, contact active@wandsworth.gov.uk or call (020) 8871 8389 to get involved.
