June 8th & 9th 2005
Motorists who drive petrol engine cars can have their exhaust emissions
tested free of charge as part of an ongoing council campaign to raise
awareness of air pollution and improve air quality in the borough.
Environmental health officers will check the amount of pollution being
produced by car exhaust fumes. If the emissions are too high, people will
be advised to have their vehicle serviced - which often solves the problem.
Poor air quality can have a significant impact upon human health. Air
pollution can trigger increased admissions to hospitals and contribute
to the premature death of those who suffer respiratory illness.
The emissions testing sessions will be held on Wednesday, June 8 from
10am to 4pm in the car park at Asda in Clapham Junction and again on Thursday,
June 9 between 10am and 4pm in the Sainsbury car park in Garratt Lane,
Wandsworth.
Vehicles in the council's fleet will also be tested to make sure that
they meet satisfactory emissions levels.
