With Cancer Research Race for Life in Clapham
As Mother’s Day approaches - March 30th if you are unsure - Clapham mums and daughters are being invited to spend quality time together by entering Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life on Clapham Common.
This year Mother’s Day falls on the same date that the clocks spring forward and British summer time starts. It’s a timely reminder to make the most of the lighter evenings by giving mums the attention they truly deserve and pledging to prepare for Race for Life together.
Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k, 10k and Pretty Muddy events which raises millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer sooner.
By committing to walk, run, jog or get pretty muddy on their way round the course, mums and daughters will be investing time in creating precious memories together.
And by getting sponsored to fund life-saving research, they will be helping more people survive so they in turn can enjoy more precious moments with their loved ones.
This year, Race for Life Pretty Muddy takes place on Sunday 5 October with Race for Life 5k and 10k on Saturday 31 May.
Fiona Murray, Race for Life event manager in London, said:
“We are urging women in South West London to give their mums the gift of time this Mother’s Day, by signing up to Race for Life together. The feel-good factor that comes from being part of the formidable army of women ready to show cancer who’s boss will last far longer than the more traditional Mother’s Day gifts of chocolates and flowers.
“Race for Life events are not competitive. They are not about being fit or fast. Some women might worry about standing alongside runners decked out in lycra but nothing could be further from the truth. The reality on the day is that participants of all shapes, sizes and ages generate an electric energy as they unite in their determination to defeat cancer.”
Although the number of people being diagnosed with cancer is going up - largely due to the fact that people are living longer and cancer is predominantly a disease of old age - the good news is that, thanks to research, survival rates have doubled in the past 40 years. More people across Greater London are now beating the disease than ever before.
Last year, 3,200 women took part in Race for Life in Clapham and raised a fantastic £300,000. This year, organisers need 3,400 women and girls to take part and help raise £318,000 for vital research.
Fiona added:
“Mother’s Day is the special occasion when we acknowledge that universal truth – it’s mums who make the world go round! We all know how committed mothers can be when they really make up their minds to do something. And we want to harness that power and create a unique force that will stop cancer in its tracks. That’s why we need mums and daughters to enter Race for Life today.”
