Wandsworth Votes To Remain With Huge Majority

As rest of UK decides to ditch the European Union

Residents of Wandworth voted strongly to Remain in the European Union in yesterday's historic referendum on the United Kingdom's membership of the EU.

The result in the borough was called at 2.27am and was as follows:

The total number of ballot papers	158,018
Votes cast in favour of REMAIN	118,463
Votes cast in favour of LEAVE	39,421

This means that 75% voted to Remain while 25% voted to Leave. Just under 60% of the electorate in London were for Remain.

Local MP Justine Greening tweeted: "This isn't the path I wanted Britain to take but we need to respect the result & do our best to confront the challenges brexit now brings"

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he believed London would continue to be a successful city and called on the UK to remain part of the single market saying, "Leaving the single market of 500 million people - with its free-trade benefits - would be a mistake."

28 of London's boroughs voted for Remain with Lambeth recording the highest percentage of 79%. Wandsworth was the fourth highest for staying in the EU behind Hackney and Haringey as well as Lambeth.

There were 2.2 million Remain votes compared to 1.5 million for Leave. Barking and Dagenham, Bexley, Sutton, Havering and Hillingdon were the only boroughs to support Brexit.

Turnout was around two per cent lower in the capital than the rest of the UK, in part due to torrential rain and transport problems in the south-east on polling day.

The local vote was in contrast to the national result which saw 51.9% vote to Leave, and 48.1% to Remain.
