Network Rail Promise Platforms For Local Commuters

with platforms to be extended at Putney, Wandsworth Town & Clapham Junction

Commuters travelling on the Windsor line from Putney, Wandsworth Town and Clapham Junction will all benefit from this plan to ease overcrowding at peak travel times.

Network Rail say they hope to have extended 10-car trains running between Windsor and Waterloo by the end of 2011.

All four platforms at Wandsworth Town and three of the four at Putney will be extended. The works at Clapham Junction will affect platforms 3 and 4.

Executive member for transport Guy Senior pictured right said:
“It’s been a long time coming but local commuters who face a daily battle to squeeze into overcrowded carriages will welcome this news.  It’s not just about making the platforms longer – we also need to make sure South West Trains lay on the extra carriages.  We also want to see similar progress on other lines in the borough – particularly at Earlsfield where commuters experience similar difficulties.”

Councillors have been lobbying for extra capacity on local commuter services for years. The proposal to introduce 10-car trains on suburban services is included in the South West Main Line Route Utilisation Strategy.
