What are Safer Neighbourhood teams?
Ward Surgery
We are pleased to announce that the monthly Surgery, located in the Ackroydon East Community Centre Lower Hall, Montfort Place, is a success. It is helping to give us an understanding of the community issues and gives the opportunity for you to come and chat to us off of the street.
We have included a poster for our monthly Ward Surgeries with this newsletter; please display this poster wherever you can and hope to meet you at one of the surgeries.
The team have been very successful over the last month, several potential drug deals have been prevented and general disruption has been a constant to these offenders.
An intelligence lead search warrant was executed at drug dealing premises resulting in the successful recovery of a firearm for which the owner was arrested and received a 5-year prison sentence.
Drug dealing is still a West Hill Ward Priority and the team remain dedicated to working with our partners and residents to stop dealing in the West Hill area.
***************************
The team have been meeting lots of community groups recently at our first successful Workers lunch meeting in November for which we hope to establish regular quarterly meetings where all different representative groups of the community can meet and discuss how best to serve community issues.
We have also attended the over 50’s club at St. Paul’s Church on Inner Park Road giving crime prevention advise to our more mature residents which we like to do regularly.
If you know of an event or place you feel would be beneficial of us attending please call us or email us an invite on the contact details below and if it is possible we will be happy to come along.

Anti-social Behaviour is still also a West Hill Ward priority and the team are ever aware of the disruption to the enjoyment of every day life this can cause to our residents.
We are still regularly patrolling in the Wimbledon Park Road and Southfields tube area and we will be there to keep an eye on the school children whenever our shift pattern allows us but please be reminded that we do work a variable shift pattern and Safer neighbourhoods is not a 24 hour service, if you do need police in an emergency always dial 999.
We have noticed that with our constant patrols in the area the school children are moving off home more quickly and we have established a positive relationship with the Assistant Headteacher at St. Cecilia’s school. Obviously there will always be some congestion in the area on school days as it is a transport hub area and not all the children can fit on the buses in one go so some consideration should be given to that point.
We did have a recent increase in the theft of mopeds on the ward, which resulted in a small group of youths riding stolen mopeds around the ward. We quickly got on top of the situation and consequently 2 youths were arrested and 4 owners were reunited with their mopeds. The situation seems to have abated after these arrests but if you know of any further attempts on the theft of mopeds please contact the police immediately.
We are still aware of some small gangs loitering around in some area of the ward and whenever possible we are engaging with these youths and discouraging their presence in areas which cause discomfort to our residents. We remind you not to confront these gangs yourselves but if they are causing distress to you call police to deal with the matter.
We had a very successful Halloween and Bonfire night period this year with 37% reduction in 999 calls for Antisocial behaviour and an amazing 71% reduction in 999 calls for fireworks being used dangerously.
Anti-social Behaviour will not be tolerated by the West Hill team and any youth who comes to notice will be stopped and asked to account for their actions, a letter about their behaviour could be sent to their parents and right at the top end of the scale, if they persist, evidence will be gather to issue them with Anti-Social Behaviour Order (ASBO).
In Remembrance
The team recently helped out with the Putney Remembrance Day parade along side the British Legion that was held on Sunday 9th November 2008.
It was a very successful and emotional day with the Parade setting off from the British Legion site on Upper Richmond Road and being lead by the spectacular Green Hackle Pipes and Drums Band. Others in the parade included the local scouts group and some of very own finest officers in very smart full tunic and white glove dress uniform (as pictured on the right).
The parade then turned onto Putney high Street where the PCSO’s along with the finest of Wandsworth’s Special constables controlled the traffic to let the parade pass smoothly by.

Motor Vehicle Crime Wandsworth is currently experiencing an increase in motor vehicle crime. We are asking for your help to combat this problem, by asking you to ensure that you leave nothing on show in your vehicle. This includes satellite navigation systems and cradles, mobile phones, computers, cash and other valuables. We would also ask that when your vehicle is left unattended, no matter for how short a time, it is locked and secured. Car crime can be distressing and annoying as it can cause a lot of inconvenience – you could without a car for weeks, waiting for the garage to make repairs or for your insurer to pay. That’s why the security features of your car should be as important as any other feature. A lot of vehicle crime results from criminals seeing opportunities and taking them. You can easily outsmart the car thief by following the simple advice given below: |

Pedal Cycle Thefts Unfortunately there has been an increase in the theft of bicycles on the ward and so we would like to remind everyone to keep them securely locked when unattended. You can also register your cycles frame number on the above immobilise website, this number is found on the under side of the frame where the pedals are. We understand that this is also a problem on West hill and can cause an unpleasant atmosphere, but you don’t have to wait to see us to get this removed you can contact the Graffiti the Removal Hotline at anytime on: 0208 871 7049 And remember if you see anyone committing this offence contact police immediately or crime stoppers anonymously. For your information There is new non-emergency number for reporting non-urgent crime, which is 0300 123 1212 |
