Wandsworth’s Winning Start At London Youth Games

Currently second after the first of 60 events

Talented youngsters got Wandsworth off to a winning start at this year’s London Youth Games with a series of cross country victories.

The annual competition began on Saturday, November 17, with the cross country contest – the first of 60 events that span the Games between November and July.

The scoring competition was made up of boys and girls races in three age groups, with the first three athletes home in each group contributing towards the team points. Other races took place – but the results did not count towards the Youth Games leader board.

One of the day’s biggest success stories was recorded by brother and sister Oliver and Saskia Millard, who each took home Gold in their respective races.

Saskia helped the Wandsworth girls team win the overall team competition after triumphing in the under-13 race. The girls’ under-17 team added to the Gold rush by winning their age category while the under-15s finished in an impressive fifth place.

In the boys cross country contests, the under 13s finished in seventh place, the under 15s in 13th place and the under 17s in 11th place – all resulting in a 10th place finish in the overall team competition.

In the under 11s race, which was introduced this year as a non scoring event, Oliver secured the Millard family’s double triumph by winning the boys race.

Team manager, Anne-Marie Ormonde, said:
“All of our young athletes put in a fantastic amount of training for this event. They work so hard every year and I am so pleased for them. This will put us in good stead for the season. We missed the overall top spot by one point last year – so we will really be pushing on for the rest of the year.”
