Pupils at special schools in Wandsworth will compete for a place in the All London Finals
Pupils from Greenmead, Linden Lodge, Oak Lodge and Paddock Junior and Senior schools did battle against other central London boroughs at Southfields Academy and turned in storming performances in sports including boccia, football, athletics and table cricket.
Wandsworth will now face Lambeth, Camden and Islington in the Central London final on March 6. The winner will qualify for the All London final in June.
The Panathlon Challenge gives disabled young people the opportunity to compete against their peers. It's run by the Panathlon Foundation, which works with schools across the UK to open up access to sport.
Wandsworth Council's Sports Services team works with special and mainstream schools throughout the year to develop sports and nurture young talent, leading up to the London Youth Games finals in the summer. The council's school games organiser and disability sports development officer worked closely with the Panathlon team to get them ready to compete.
The council's leisure and culture spokesman, Cllr Jonathan Cook, said:
"We're all extremely proud of our Panathlon athletes and it's fantastic that we're through to the final. Events like this build on the work we do in Wandsworth with special and mainstream schools to ensure all our young people have the opportunity to develop their talents and take part in competitive sport."
