Sharp Increase In Referrals To Foodbank

Half year figures saw 24% increase in recipients of emergency packs

Figures released by Wandsworth Foodbank show that 1764 people received three days’ emergency food from Wandsworth foodbank between April-September 2015, compared to 1425 people in the same six months of 2014 – an increase of 24 per cent.



In the same period there was sharp rise in single parent families needing to use Wandsworth Foodbank – 43 per cent increase on the same period last year. Three in ten of all people helped were children.

One third of all the people helped cited the biggest cause for their crisis was problems with benefit delivery (delays, administrative errors, change and sanctions) which resulted in their to referral to the Foodbank.

More than three thousand people were helped by Wandsworth Foodbank over the last year, with three days' emergency food and support.

The latest figures published by the Trussell Trust charity show that nationally over one million people have received at least three days' emergency foof supplies, more than in any previous year. The data indicates that despite signs of economic recovery, the number of people turning to foodbanks continues to grow.
