Don’t pay companies hundreds of pounds for a council tax review
Residents who believe their home is in the wrong council tax banding and would like it reassessed are being reminded by Wandsworth Council that this can be done free of charge by Government inspectors.
The reminder is being issued after it emerged that at least one company is touting for business in the borough and offering residents the same service – but for a fee that could rise to hundreds of pounds.
People who feel they are paying too much because their home has been placed in the wrong band can appeal direct to the Valuation Office Agency – which is part of HM Revenue and Customs - formerly known as the Inland Revenue.
Residents who ask the VOA to re-assess their circumstances will not be charged.
Consumer protection spokesman Cllr Jonathan Cook said: “If people believe their home is in the wrong band then all they have to do is contact the VOA who will review their case free of charge.
“We are issuing this advice to our residents because we’ve had reports that some commercial companies are offering to do this simple and straightforward task in exchange for a hefty fee. Paying someone hundreds of pounds to make a simple phone call is not necessary at all. You can make that call yourself and it won’t cost you a penny more than the actual cost of the call.”
