Students in Wandsworth are soon to showcase work they have created in coding clubs, a programme teaching local young people the highly desirable skill.
Wandsworth Council engaged with partners Blueshift to inspire school children to develop their skills and consider future careers in coding.
The clubs offered around one hundred students the opportunity to work collaboratively while creating their own coding projects that they can develop and keep in a portfolio.
Schools that took part were Burntwood Academy, Southfields Academy, Bolingbroke Academy, Chestnut Grove Academy, St Cecilia's, St John Bosco, Ark Academy Putney, Harris Academy, Ernest Bevin College and Graveney Academy.
Cyrus, from Harris Academy, said: “I really enjoy Blueshift Editor because I have learned so much throughout this. One day I will become a programmer and create a website which can help children learn maths through chatlines.”
Azizi, of Ernest Bevin College, said: “Learning about Bootstrap in Lesson 8 today was really interesting as it now inspired me to make a personal website over the Christmas holidays.”
A celebration event in early March will give students the opportunity to showcase their work and hear talks from knowledgeable speakers about where they could take their new skills, and career paths they could look forward to.
Wandsworth Council’s employment and skills spokesperson Cllr Kim Caddy said: “Congratulations to all the students who took part in the coding clubs and made them such a success. As new technologies develop and employers look for people with skills to match, we’re keen to make sure that our young people are being trained for their future.
“Coding clubs are a brilliant way to give Wandsworth students a foundation in this growing field, and could open their eyes to subjects that they may not have considered before, such as computing.”
