Three month consultation on tackling pollution ends on 5 August

There is still time to have your say on Wandsworth’s draft Air Quality Action Plan before the public consultation draws to a close on 5 August.

You can download the new plan from the council website and provide feedback using the online questionnaire.

The draft action plan sets out a raft of measures designed to bring down levels of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) and Particulate Matter (PM10).

It builds upon the borough’s existing action plan which includes several initiatives that have now been completed or superseded.

The actions put forward aim to tackle the sources of pollution - including traffic, boilers and construction - as well as education and awareness campaigns, lobbying, a borough wide air quality monitoring programme and partnership initiatives which will see the council working closely with community groups and individuals residents.

Environment spokesman Jonathan Cook said, “Wandsworth, in common with every inner London borough, has streets where air pollution is too high and must be brought down. We have made considerable progress in tackling these hotspots in recent years but more needs to be done to reduce the impact of poor air quality on our residents’ health.

“The draft action plan aims to accelerate the improvements we’ve made in places like Putney High Street and to expand the programme of local initiatives we run in partnership with community groups and residents.

“It would ensure the council uses its full range of powers, influence and resources to tackle the issue in a joined up and well coordinated way. We have to address air quality on every front to make the maximum impact, from educating our young people and improving public transport, to controlling construction emissions and cleaning up our own vehicle fleet."

The feedback received during the 12 week consultation period will be used to shape and refine the final version of the action plan.

A twelve week (13 May - 5 August) consultation period is now underway and the feedback received will be used to shape and refine the final version of the action plan.
