6,500 Potholes Repaired Throughout Borough
As Council commits an extra £2m to repair programme
More than 6,500 potholes have been repaired across the borough in the course of a year as Wandsworth’s ongoing drive to improve its road network continues.
And, the efforts of the borough’s highways team have been boosted by a commitment from the council to commit an additional £2m to its footway and carriageway repair programme – meaning that £6.2m will be invested in the programme in 2013/2014.
Harsh winters like the last have a particularly detrimental effect on the condition of roads but the council’s highways team has been hard at work across all 20 wards responding to reports of pothole problems.
In the 12 months ending January 31 this year a total of 6,561 potholes were repaired – equating to about 26 repairs per working day.
Wandsworth’s transport spokesman, Councillor Russell King, said:
“The council is responsible for more than 200 miles of road surface in the borough. The recent wintry conditions inevitably damage the roads, producing a short term increase in the number of potholes. Officers do their best to respond to reports of potholes in a timely fashion and are going round the entire borough making repairs. The extra investment that we are putting in will enable us to carry out all the repairs residents would expect – and to completely resurface additional roads.”
In addition to highway inspectors routinely checking the borough’s streets to check for possible issues, the council also responds to pothole problems reported by residents.
