Wandsworth Historian Celebrates its fiftieth with an edition opener focusing on the conflict and disruption to everyday life, cronyism and sleaze in 1971.
It includes details of how terrorists were run to earth in Wandsworth and a story about Sporle, a Labour Councillor arrested for corruption, as well as an intriguing picture of Peter Hain amongst a group of Ku Klux Klan at Putney Station.
Also in this issue there is an account of the success over more than a century of the Grand Theatre, Clapham Junction, and a glimpse into a project-that-never-was to build a ‘City of Health’ in Victorian Battersea.
Other items include the launch of the Young’s Brewery archive now deposited with the Wandsworth Heritage Service, and the rise and fall of a major drapers’ business in Wandsworth High Street.
The Wandsworth Historical Society publishes the Wandsworth Historian, its local history journal, twice a year. The magazine is free to members.
