Mayor of Wandsworth urges people to think about heroes past and present

Putney and Wandsworth residents are encouraged to commemorate VE Day at home this Friday as the nation celebrates victory in Europe 75 years ago.

In a special video the Mayor of Wandsworth Cllr Jane Cooper is urging people to think about heroes past and present.

She is encouraging residents to show their support by observing the two minutes' silence at 11am, joining the 3pm Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of World War Two and by making bunting and hanging it at their windows and in front of their homes – here’s some advice from the BBC on how to do it.

Many street parties and other celebrations have had to be cancelled, but A VE Day image will be projected onto Wandsworth Town Hall after dark to show the borough’s support.

Cllr Cooper said: As we remember the comradeship of all on the home front who simply got on with this, I am heartened to see that same fortitude today as the citizens of Wandsworth pull together Please take a few minutes to remember the men and women who made VE Day possible.”

Wandsworth has many links with the armed forces, and is home to Army Reserve soldiers from the London Regiment based in Clapham Junction, C Company 5th Battalion The Royal Fusiliers in Balham, and the Royal Marines Reserve based in Southfields. The borough also hosts army, sea and air cadet squadrons.

Much of the borough, but especially Battersea and Nine Elms, was heavily bombed during the war and many civilians lost their lives. They are commemorated by a memorial at Christchurch Gardens.
