New charges on buses and tubes begin in January
The new fare levels for travel on tube and buses have been announced. They are to be implemented from January 2012.
On average they will increase by 5.6%. The rise is lower than originally announced by Transport for London after they secured £136 million from the Government to help keep the increase down.
A single fare using an Oyster card to travel in zones 1 and 2 in peak hours has risen by 8% to £2.70. A single bus journey using an Oyster card is up by 3.8%
The Day peak zone 1-4 Travelcard and cap initially planned to rise by eight per cent will now rise by six per cent and the 7 Day zone 1-2 Travelcard has been held down from an eight per cent increase to 5.8 per cent.
Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: 'Every penny of this cash injection will go towards keeping fares as low as possible. That is very good news in the current economic climate and even better the unprecedented level of investment to improve London's transport network will continue unabated.'
Ken Livingstone said, “Under enormous pressure from Londoners for a fare cut, the Tories have come up with another fare rise, making Londoners hundreds of pounds a year worse off and meaning a single bus fare by Oyster is now up 50 per cent under this Mayor."
He is campaigning of London Mayor with a pledge to cut fares by 5%
He added, 'London has a moonlighting mayor with a second salary worth £250,000 and it is little wonder that he is so out of touch he thinks this fare rise is what people want.”
The announcement comes on the same day that a deal was included with London Overground workers that will see them get a minimum of £650 each for working during the Olympics. They are to receive time and a quarter for shifts worked during the Olympic and Paralympic games.
