to promote the Dangerous Dog Pledge
Today Richard Tracey, joined the Deputy Mayor for Policing, Kit Malthouse, in calling for urgent action to be taken to tackle dangerous dogs and encouraging members of the public to sign up to the new Dangerous Dog Pledge.
They met with the victims of dog attacks alongside some of the family pets mauled by so-called ‘weapon dogs’. Representatives of animal welfare charities were at the event, including Battersea Dogs & Cats Home who brought some of the dogs in their care.
Richard Tracey, London Assembly Member for Merton and Wandsworth, said
"I am very concerned about dangerous dogs and will continue to campaign with Kit Malthouse on this serious matter.
I’m proud that Wandsworth Council was the first council to introduce compulsory dog micro-chipping measures on council estates to tackle dangerous dogs. However more needs to be done on a national level.
There have been several terrifying incidents in and around my constituency including the case in Mitcham where one dangerous dog escaped from its home and attacked four people including one child."
"He continued:We must lobby Parliament to acknowledge that dangerous dogs are used as weapons in the same way that knives and guns are and so should be treated as weapons by the law. There needs to be stiffer penalties and tougher legislation to protect the public from this daily threat."
